Spain's farm unions demand aid and regulation as livestock prices plunge

Agrarian groups in Spain have called on authorities to intervene after sharp declines in livestock prices. In Galicia, the union Unións Agrarias urged the regional parliament to adopt concrete measures to address inequalities in the milk supply chain, citing an April contract renewal that forced a steep price cut and cost dairy farms an estimated €19 million a month. The union’s secretary‑general, Roberto García, asked for a parliamentary commission to study milk pricing and to introduce a mediation model similar to France’s.

Separately, the national farm union Unió de Pagesos petitioned the government for immediate direct aid for veal producers, warning of a continued fall in cattle prices driven by higher feed, fuel and energy costs and a surge in Brazilian beef imports. The union criticised EU trade policy and highlighted that, despite the European Commission’s decision to exclude Brazil from the list of authorised meat exporters, large volumes of frozen beef continue to enter the EU market. Both unions also called for stronger food‑chain controls and greater transparency on meat origins.
