Spain's Flexible Retirement Allows Seniors to Work While Drawing Pensions
Spain's Social Security data show that in 2025, 76,595 retirees (a 9.4% rise from the previous year) combined their pension with part‑time employment. The flexible retirement scheme, effective from 1 April, permits pensioners to work between 25% and 75% of a full‑time schedule. Pension benefits are reduced proportionally to the hours worked, while contributions to Social Security continue, enabling a later recalculation of the pension amount.
Eligibility excludes members of special regimes for civil servants, armed forces, and judicial staff. Applicants must already be receiving a pension and must undertake the new job under a part‑time contract. Health‑care benefits remain under the pensioner regime despite continued employment.
