Spain's food sector faces refrigeration transition challenges

The food distribution sector in Spain is facing significant challenges in transitioning its commercial refrigeration systems to comply with European F-Gas regulations. These regulations require the replacement of fluorinated gases with alternatives that have lower atmospheric warming potential.

Key obstacles to this transition include a shortage of specialized labor, with an estimated deficit of nearly 10,000 qualified technicians in Spain, and high economic costs. ASEDAS estimates that pending investments for its member companies exceed 2.5 billion euros. Despite these hurdles, there has been a 200% increase in the use of CO2-based refrigeration systems, and digitalization is helping to improve maintenance and reduce refrigerant leaks.

Parallel developments in the cold chain logistics sector highlight a shift toward digital documentation, automated logistics, and the need for greater resilience in temperature-controlled transport. The industry is currently navigating a complex landscape of geopolitical influences on tariffs, rising costs, and the necessity for specialized infrastructure to handle fresh products.
