Spain's football dominance traced to Cruyff's Dutch legacy

Spain's recent haul of two World Cups and three European Championships is linked to a pivotal moment in August 1973, when Ajax players elected left‑winger Piet Keizer as captain over Johan Cruyff. Upset, Cruyff called his father‑in‑law, businessman Cor Coster, demanding "Voglio andarmene da qui. Portami al Barcellona" and soon signed with Barcelona.

Cruyff’s tenure as player (1973‑78) and later as coach (1988‑96) introduced a philosophy of ball possession, high pressing and intelligent organisation. He taught this style at La Masia, influencing generations of Spanish coaches. As he said, "Giocare a calcio – diceva – è semplice, ma giocare un calcio semplice è la cosa più difficile che ci sia". The approach spread across the Liga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation, forming the "Spanish school" of football, encapsulated in the saying "Se la palla ce l' abbiamo noi, loro non possono segnare". This tactical foundation underpins Spain’s recent international triumphs.
