Spain Social Security reaches record 3.5 million foreign workers

Spain's Social Security system has reached a historic milestone, with foreign worker affiliation exceeding 3.5 million for the first time. As of July, the average number of foreign affiliates stood at 3,512,223, representing 15.6% of the total workforce in the country. This marks a 13.6% increase compared to the previous year, significantly outpacing the 2.9% growth seen in the overall system.

This surge is attributed in part to an extraordinary regularization process launched in late April, which has already resulted in 262,475 foreign workers being registered in the Social Security system. The growth is particularly pronounced in sectors such as hospitality, agriculture, and construction.

Regional data shows varying levels of impact. In Galicia, the foreign population has tripled over the last 24 years. In Castilla y León, foreign affiliation grew by 14.58% year-on-year. Other regions like Valladolid and Canarias also reported significant increases. Labor unions have noted the importance of these workers to the economy but have called for more efficient administrative processes to manage the influx and reduce bureaucracy.
