Rodrigo Alonso: Rural abandonment, not climate change, drives Spain fires
Rodrigo Alonso, Vox's deputy spokesperson in the Andalusian Parliament and national spokesman for Labour and Rural Affairs, says climate change is not behind the devastating forest fires sweeping Spain. He attributes the fires to "abandonment of the rural environment", citing more than 60 million tonnes of dry vegetation accumulated compared with the previous year. Alonso criticised Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s call for a State Climate Emergency Pact, calling the diagnosis "erroneous", and urged the government to fund a National Prevention and Fight against Fires plan that would focus on year‑round prevention, incentivise landowners to manage and clean forested areas, and ensure 100 % budget execution for fire‑prevention measures in Andalucía.
Journalist Pilar Rahola highlighted that €312 million of EU Next Generation funds earmarked for sustainable forest management and fire‑prevention remain unspent, out of a total €401 million allocated to that line. She said only about €89 million has been awarded so far, with delays caused by administrative and bureaucratic obstacles. The lack of execution limits Spain’s capacity to address the growing fire risk.
