Spain's Government Holds Minute of Silence for Gender Violence Victims
Government delegations in Spain observed a minute of silence to honor a 61‑year‑old woman and her 31‑year‑old daughter who were killed on 7 July in Mijas, Málaga. The ceremony in Ciudad Real province was led by vice‑president Adrián Fernández, while a similar observance in Ceuta was presided over by delegate Miguel Ángel Pérez Triano. Both events highlighted that the murders bring the total number of women killed by partners or ex‑partners in Spain to 28 for 2026, with three minors also recorded as victims of vicarious violence.
Officials called for a review of prevention strategies, stronger education on gender equality, and greater societal involvement. They reiterated the availability of support resources such as the 016 confidential hotline, emergency numbers 112, 091, 062, and the AlertCops app, emphasizing that each killing represents a collective failure and urging continued commitment to combat gender‑based violence.
