Spain's handball squads mark 20 years of world titles

Over the past two decades Spanish team sports have accumulated a remarkable medal haul, highlighted by the success of the handball national squads. After the 2004 Athens Olympics, the men's handball team won its first World Championship gold in 2005 under coach Juan Carlos Pastor. A second gold followed at the 2013 World Championship in Madrid, with a dominant 35‑19 final victory over Denmark. The team added bronze medals in Egypt (2021) and Sweden (2023) under coach Jordi Ribera.

The broader era also saw Spanish teams earn medals across other disciplines, with notable achievements in gymnastics, canoeing, sailing, football, basketball and women's handball. The cumulative record includes seven golds, two silvers and six bronzes in major team‑sport world events.
