Spain's health experts urge protein‑rich diet for healthy aging
The World Health Organization notes that a balanced diet can prevent malnutrition and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, type‑2 diabetes and certain cancers. Spanish health specialists, including the Spanish Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology, recommend increasing protein intake—through lean meats, fish, eggs, legumes, dairy and nuts—to counteract age‑related muscle loss (sarcopenia). They advise spreading protein across breakfast, lunch and dinner for optimal absorption. In addition, they stress consuming fresh plant‑based foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains to boost fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, support gut health and maintain overall autonomy in older adults.
