Spain's health ministry MIR decree criticised for ignoring regional languages

The Spanish government coalition of PSOE and Sumar introduced a new decree governing the MIR system, which controls access to specialised medical training. Plataforma per la Llengua says the text, drafted by the Ministry of Health, perpetuates a centralist model that overlooks the linguistic rights of patients and health‑care professionals in Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia.

The organisation submitted a set of amendments demanding that the decree guarantee effective knowledge of the co‑official languages of these territories, so that medical care can be provided in patients' mother tongues without discrimination. It denounced the measure as “not a technical oversight; it is a sign of political neglect and assimilating centralism,” highlighting the gap between the government's rhetoric on linguistic diversity and the legislation’s practice.
