Spain's heatwave forces shelter closures and limited climate refuge access

In Tarragona, the municipal civil protection map lists 34 climate refuges—15 outdoors and 19 indoors—making the city the Catalan provincial capital with the fewest such facilities. Many indoor sites operate only in the morning or afternoon, are closed on Sundays, and some lack water sources or clear signage, leaving residents largely unaware of their availability.

Across the Ribera region, a red‑alert heat warning for temperatures up to 42 °C prompted several municipalities to take preventive actions. Alzira closed the Murta‑Casella natural park and limited market hours, while Algemesí suspended outdoor sports and kept only the summer pool open for seniors. Benifaíó halted a summer school program, Carlet banned forest work and fires, and Alcúdia offered free pool access. Authorities urged hydration, shade, light clothing, and avoidance of leaving people or animals in vehicles, and they reminded citizens to call 112 for emergencies.
