Spain’s Hidden Canyon Near Madrid and Murcian Villages Highlight Rural Getaways

A red limestone canyon about 70 km north of Madrid, carved by the river Lozoya, is known locally as the “Colorado madrileño.” The site houses the Pontón de la Oliva, the oldest dam in the Canal de Isabel II system, built in 1851 by Carlist‑war prisoners and abandoned after the water seeped through the porous rock.
