Spain's insurance industry details wildfire damage coverage
The Spanish insurance association UNESPA released a FAQ answering common questions about recent wildfires that have ravaged areas such as La Vall d’Uixó, Castellón, Madrid and Ávila. It explains that insurers cover damages to insured persons and property under multi‑risk home policies, including the building’s structure, contents, smoke, ash and even costs of fire‑fighting and temporary accommodation. Payments are limited to the insured value or capital sum specified in each contract; the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros does not automatically compensate for wildfire damage unless the event is classified as an extraordinary risk under the law.
Homeowners are advised to verify that fire coverage is included in their policies, confirm that the insured capital matches reconstruction costs, and review any exclusions. The FAQ also notes that insurers may assist with expenses related to debris removal, document replacement and other post‑fire services.
