Spain's IVACE+i backs digital product passports and turf recycling

IVACE+i, the Valencian Innovation Agency, is funding two EU‑backed sustainability projects. The TRACA initiative, coordinated by ITI, Inescop, ITE and others, has built a functional prototype of a multisector Digital Product Passport (PDP) for batteries and footwear. The system secures data on origin, materials, use, maintenance and end‑of‑life handling, using NFC/RFID tags embedded in shoe soles that can be read by smartphones. Pilot testing with shoe maker Pikolinos demonstrates real‑world integration, while battery data aims to enable second‑life applications such as repurposing in solar installations.

The DECAMP project, also financed by IVACE+i and EU FEDER funds, focuses on fully recycling artificial turf. By mechanically and chemically processing fibers, latex, polypropylene and polyethylene, the consortium—including Acteco, ADDITIUM, FANBASE and Realturf Systems—produces high‑value materials for sports furniture, new synthetic turf systems and 3D‑printing feedstock. Early pilot batches have shown suitability for elastic bases, seating, and additive‑manufacturing blends, with performance testing coordinated by the Institute of Biomechanics of Valencia. Both initiatives aim to support circular‑economy goals and anticipate forthcoming EU regulations on rubber fillers.
