The Spanish Council of Ministers approved the creation of 700 new positions in the justice system – 500 judges and 200 prosecutors – marking the largest staff expansion in the country’s democratic history. The reform, driven by the Law on Efficiency of the Public Justice Service, replaces single‑judge courts with multi‑judge tribunals of instance, cutting the cost of each new post from about €500,000 to €100,000 and limiting the total outlay to €55 million.

Regional allocations include 95 new judges and 38 prosecutors for Andalusia, 69 judges and 32 prosecutors for the Community of Madrid, and 19 judges with 7 prosecutors for Castilla y León (including one new seat at the Audiencia Provincial). Overall, the judiciary workforce grows by roughly 8.5 % and the fiscal staff by about 7 %, with the new posts to be filled through the standard competitive selection process.

The government presents the move as a historic step to modernise and speed up the administration of justice across Spain.
