Spain's lighthouses featured in new interactive map

An interactive map project titled Mapped Earth, created by Aaron Becker, provides a detailed digital representation of Spain’s lighthouses. The map features a dark design where the silhouette of the Spanish coast is illuminated by the real-time blinking and rotating patterns of individual lighthouses.

To ensure accuracy, the project utilizes data from OpenSeaMap, OpenStreetMap, and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s (NGA) List of Lights. The map displays 140 lighthouses along the Spanish coast, including 91 rotating, 49 fixed, and 30 with color sectors. Users can zoom in to view 3D nocturnal relief and access specific data for each lighthouse, such as its name, range, focal height, and light character.

While GPS and AIS (Automatic Identification System) are standard in modern maritime navigation, Puertos del Estado maintains a Coastal Aid to Navigation Network consisting of 187 elements, including 187 lighthouses, to complement these electronic systems.
