Almería wildfire in Los Gallardos kills 13, evacuations end

A forest fire ignited on Thursday near Los Gallardos in the province of Almería, southern Spain, rapidly spread across roughly 7,000 hectares. The blaze, described by regional president Juan Manuel Moreno as "technically controlled," initially left twelve people dead.

The death toll rose to thirteen after a 93‑year‑old British woman succumbed to severe burns in hospital, bringing the total of foreign victims—including several British tourists and possible Belgian nationals—to at least four. More than a dozen people were injured, some with critical burns covering up to 40 % of their bodies.

Around 1,500 residents were evacuated from eleven municipalities. After three days of intensive firefighting by the Infoca emergency plan, the Unit Militar de Emergencias, aerial units and drones, authorities declared the fire stabilised on Sunday and began allowing evacuees to return home. The emergency status was downgraded to pre‑emergency, and most emergency personnel have been withdrawn.

Investigators focus on a decayed wooden pole that supported a low‑voltage cable, which may have sparked the fire. DNA sampling continues to identify the deceased, while officials stress that the situation remains under close monitoring.
