Spain clinches 2026 World Cup; coach Luis de la Fuente to stay through 2030
Spain defeated Argentina 1–0 in extra time of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey, securing the nation’s second world title. 65‑year‑old head coach Luis de la Fuente became the oldest manager ever to win the tournament, overtaking Vicente del Bosque.
Following the triumph, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced a contract extension that will keep de la Fuente in charge through the 2030 World Cup, where Spain will be one of the hosts. The extension also includes an upgraded salary package.
The victory generated additional storylines: the prize‑money award of $34 million could be reduced by U.S. withholding tax, prompting debate in Congress; midfielders Fabian Ruiz and Gavi were presented with their weight in tomatoes as a local celebration; and teenage winger Lamine Yamal received unexpected free publicity for German underwear brand 6PM during the final. Former Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski later said Yamal never displayed his best form because of a recent hamstring injury.
Spain’s unbeaten run now stands at 38 matches, the longest streak for any senior national side.
