Spain's mass immigration regularisation sparks warnings of public service strain

The Spanish government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has launched a mass regularisation programme for undocumented migrants, initially projected to benefit around half a million people. Experts warn the actual number could surpass one million, putting severe pressure on housing, health, education and security services that are already operating near capacity. Administrative bottlenecks, such as missing appointments for fingerprinting, have created chaos that criminal networks are exploiting. Critics argue the policy prioritises short‑term political gain over prudent planning, risking long‑term strain on the welfare state.

Opposition groups and sector specialists stress that the influx of newly regularised residents, combined with subsequent family reunification, will dramatically increase demand for public resources and could jeopardise the quality of services for both newcomers and existing citizens.
