Spain’s Mediterranean Corridor railway faces major delays, only 36% operational

The Association of Valencian Entrepreneurs (AVE) warned that just 36% of the Mediterranean Corridor railway network is in service, while 84% of the route remains under construction. The semi‑annual “First Checkup of Works 2026” report says numerous milestones have been pushed to 2026‑2027 or later, jeopardising investment, job creation and Spain’s logistical competitiveness.

Key projects delayed include the double‑track upgrade between Tarragona and Castellón, now slated for 2028, and the third track between Castellón and Valencia, expected to finish this year. The Valencia freight tunnel is still in the study phase, and several works in Alicante, Catalonia, Murcia and Andalusia lack firm timelines. The corridor’s full completion—from Algeciras to the French border—has no set date, with the final Almería‑France section only projected for the end of 2028 or early 2029.
