Spain's Melon and Watermelon Campaign Faces Low Prices, Says Industry Leader
Antonio Atienza, president of the Lonja del Melón y la Sandía, told the radio program ‘Agropopular’ that the current melon and watermelon campaign is “complicated” because prices are below production costs. He reported that extra‑grade melons trade at 23‑25 cents per kilo, other varieties at 12‑14 cents, while seedless watermelons range from 21‑26 cents per kilo. Heat waves have accelerated fruit maturation, causing up to 80 % of the crop to ripen in a single early pass, shortening the usual multiple‑pass schedule.
Atienza noted strong exports of small‑size watermelons to Central Europe—Germany, France and the Netherlands—where prices are 12‑14 cents per kilo, but warned that excess supply hampers price recovery. He remains optimistic for the remainder of the campaign, which runs until 30 September, expecting better prices for sandías in the coming week.
Meanwhile, SPAR Gran Canaria staff are using their expertise to guide shoppers in selecting ripe melons, watermelons and other seasonal fruits. The retailer highlights personalized advice, proper storage tips, and the promotion of locally grown produce, reinforcing its role as a trusted source for fresh fruit on the island.
