Spain's Mercamálaga and ports record stable or growing commodity volumes in early 2026

Mercamálaga, the main wholesale market of eastern Andalusia, handled over 140,000 tonnes of goods in the first half of 2026, matching the volume of the same period in 2025 despite adverse weather and geopolitical factors. Fruit, vegetable and potato sales accounted for about 128,000 tonnes, while fish and seafood contributed roughly 15,300 tonnes, with more than half of fresh produce and 70 % of marine products originating from Andalusia.

Spanish ports moved 49.2 million tonnes of cargo in May 2026, a 3.15 % increase on the same month a year earlier. Liquid bulk rose 7.79 % and solid bulk 9.72 %, while ro‑ro traffic and container volumes slipped slightly. The busiest ports were Algeciras (9.2 million tonnes), Valencia (7.1 million tonnes) and Barcelona (6.25 million tonnes). Overall, the first five months of 2026 saw a modest 0.3 % rise in total port handling compared with the previous year.
