Spain's Ministry of Labour accelerates 2027 minimum wage hike
The Spanish Ministry of Labour, led by Vice President Yolanda Díaz, has convened the advisory commission of experts to begin the process of determining the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI) for 2027. The government aims to accelerate this process to finalize and potentially publish the new wage amount before the general elections scheduled for November 29.
The advisory committee, composed of technical experts from the ministries of Labour, Economy, and Finance, along with representatives from major unions such as CCOO and UGT, will produce a report proposing an increase range. This report is intended to help adjust the wage to inflation and meet the goal of setting the SMI at 60% of the average net salary, in line with European Social Charter recommendations.
While the government is required to consult social partners, the Ministry has noted it maintains the authority to raise the SMI even under a caretaker government. The current SMI stands at 1,221 euros per month. Although unions have requested increases exceeding 5% to combat inflation, the employers' association, CEOE, has not participated in recent SMI pacts.
