Spain's Mountain Rescue Services Report High Rate of Uninjured Evacuations

The 2025 annual report by Montaña Segura and the Guardia Civil's mountain rescue groups (GREIM) shows that 48 % of the 865 people assisted in the Aragonese Pyrenees required evacuation without any physical injury. Most rescues occurred on clear days (81 %) and during the descent phase, with fatigue, dehydration, panic and disorientation cited as the main causes. Hiking accounted for 49 % of all interventions, far outpacing high‑mountain and ridge activities.

In the same period, four separate rescue operations were carried out between 31 July and 3 August in the province of León and the Picos de Europa. Incidents included a rock‑fall injuring two women on the Ruta del Cares, an ankle injury to a 30‑year‑old mountaineer on Peña Cerreos, a fall on Pico Torre Santa, and a bicycle‑related clavicle injury near La Pola de Gordón. All victims were evacuated by helicopter or ambulance under the coordination of the Guardia Civil and regional emergency services.
