Spain's Movimiento Sumar elects new leadership without Yolanda Díaz

Movimiento Sumar has submitted a single list of candidates to renew its governing body ahead of an extraordinary assembly on 11 July. The list, headed by the party's parliamentary spokesperson Verónica Martínez Barbero and State Secretary for Social Rights Rosa Martínez, excludes the current leader Lara Hernández, who has resigned from all party positions. Former Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun remains the sole high‑profile figure from the previous executive and is expected to become the main institutional reference of the new board.

The renewal will halve the composition of the 65‑member coordinating group, with only 31 members retained. Notable departures include former coordinator Carlos Martín, parliamentary group secretary Txema Guijarro, former UN ambassador Agustín Santos, and several ministers linked to the previous Díaz‑era such as Joaquín Pérez Rey and Amparo Merino. New members bring territorial representation from Andalusia, Galicia and the Basque Country, and expertise in housing and energy transition. The changes occur after internal crises and the departure of Vice‑President Yolanda Díaz from the party’s executive.

The new leadership aims to present a united front to support the governing coalition and to build a broader left‑wing alliance for upcoming general elections.
