Spain's NRBQ defense sector grows to 300 million euros

The European Union is mobilizing the pharmaceutical industry to ensure rapid production of medicines and countermeasures in response to potential nuclear, radiological, biological, or chemical (NRBQ) emergencies. This strategic move aligns with significant growth in Spain’s security and defense technology sector.

According to MarketsandMarkets, Spain’s NRBQ business reached approximately 298 million euros, representing a 33% increase since the start of the war in Ukraine. The sector, which stood at 224 million euros in 2023, is projected to grow at an annual rate of 5.8%. This trend mirrors broader European growth, where the market is expected to rise from 2,783 million euros in 2023 to over 3,600 million euros by 2028.

Industry experts note a technological shift from simple protective barriers toward intelligent solutions featuring early warning, detection, and self-decontamination capabilities. Spanish companies like Hispano Vema and Fecsa are developing specialized capabilities, including mobile decontamination systems, water treatment, and field hospital logistics.
