The Spanish Observatory of Racism and Xenophobia (OBERAXE) reported that roughly 55,000 hate‑filled posts appeared on social media between 11 June and 21 July 2026, coinciding with the FIFA World Cup. More than half of the messages (52%) were directly linked to the tournament.

The most frequently targeted individuals were Spanish forward Lamine Yamal – of Moroccan and Equatoguinean descent – and players of the French national team. Two‑thirds of the hateful content (66%) referred to people of North‑African origin, 13% attacked Muslims, and 15% were directed at Latin‑American populations during the Spain‑Argentina final.

Overall, 74% of the messages dehumanised the groups addressed; half employed explicitly violent language and 14% called for aggression. Additionally, 40% portrayed migrants or those of foreign ancestry as a societal “burden”, while 15% urged their expulsion. The findings were communicated by Spain’s Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.
