Spain's organ donation surge saves 100 lives in Castilla‑La Mancha

In the first five months of 2026 Castilla‑La Mancha recorded 50 organ and tissue donations – a 38.8 % rise over the same period in 2025 – enabling 100 patients to receive transplants. The University Hospital of Toledo led with 19 donations, followed by Ciudad Real (14) and Albacete (8). The region saw a rise in donation after circulatory death, with 29 such donations, and 52 % of all donations were multiorgan. Ninety‑six corneas and 659 new bone‑marrow donors were also registered.

Nationally, Spain performed 6 334 transplants in 2025 from 2 547 donors, a rate of 51.9 donors per million people, maintaining its reputation as the world leader in organ donation. The figure included 556 lung transplants, keeping Spain among the top countries despite a slight decline from the previous year. More than 5 000 people remained on waiting lists at year‑end. The Spanish model increasingly relies on donation after circulatory death, now accounting for over half of all deceased donors. As Dr Víctor Manuel Mora of SEPAR noted, “When we talk about organ donation… it literally lets patients keep living.”
