Spain's Pau Cubarsí shines in World Cup 2026 debut
Pau Cubarsí, the 19‑year‑old central defender for Spain, impressed in his first World Cup appearance at the 2026 tournament. Against Cape Verde he completed 105 of 106 passes (99% accuracy) and made 14 line‑breaks, four recoveries, two interceptions and a block while covering over 10.7 km at a top speed of 31 km/h. Playing alongside veteran Raphaël Laporte, Cubarsí was praised by coach Luis de la Fuente for his veteran‑like composure and tactical awareness. The defender, a product of Barcelona’s La Masia, had previously missed the Euro 2024 squad, won two La Liga titles, reached a Champions League semifinal and earned an Olympic gold medal before securing a starting role at the World Cup.
