Spain's People's Party submits fire‑fighting plan to Congress

Leader of Spain's People's Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, held a remote meeting from the party headquarters in Genoa with regional ministers responsible for agriculture, environment and fire fighting. Attending were party secretary‑general Miguel Tellado, sector‑coordination vice‑secretary Alma Ezcurra and economy vice‑secretary Alberto Nadal.

After the meeting, Tellado announced that the party will bring its fire‑fighting plan – a set of fifty concrete measures first presented in the summer – to the Congress of Deputies as a non‑binding parliamentary proposal (PNL). The proposal does not create legal obligations but will obligate a debate in the lower house. Tellado urged the PSOE to vote in favour and criticised the Sánchez government for attempting to shift the cost of fire‑fighting to autonomous communities and municipalities. He also called for the government to ensure that fires are extinguished in winter.

The party highlighted that recent wildfires have forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents in Madrid, Castilla‑La Mancha and Castilla y León, and argued that Spain needs additional resources to combat future fires.
