Spain's political transition and the 1979 election results
Historian Julián Casanova has addressed the political landscape of post-Franco Spain, noting that while a formal far-right party was absent, the influence of the previous regime remained significant due to an incomplete de-Francoization process.
Historical data from the first constitutional general elections in 1979 illustrates this shift. The Union of the Democratic Centre (UCD) secured 6,268,593 votes and 168 deputies, while the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) obtained 5,469,813 votes and 121 deputies. The Communist Party of Spain (PCE) received 1,938,487 votes and 23 deputies. In contrast, the extreme right, organized under Unión Nacional, garnered only 378,964 votes and a single deputy.
Records indicate that in the four years following Francisco Franco's death, only 378,964 out of 18,259,192 voters supported the Francoist hardliners.
