Spain's power‑grid bottleneck threatens industrial electrification
Industrial firms in Spain are encountering a growing obstacle to the country's clean‑energy transition: the existing electricity grid lacks sufficient capacity to absorb new demand. Companies report that, despite the availability of renewable generation and investment in green projects, many initiatives cannot proceed because they cannot secure a reliable connection to the network. Experts warn that the mismatch between rapid renewable growth and the slow expansion of transmission lines, substations and distribution infrastructure could delay decarbonisation targets and deter future industrial investment.
At the same time, Spain's major utilities – Iberdrola, Endesa and Naturgy – have formally asked the government to extend the operating life of the Almaraz nuclear plant to 2030, arguing that nuclear capacity provides essential baseload power and grid stability. The utilities contend that extending nuclear operation will help balance renewable intermittency, keep electricity prices down, and avoid a surge in gas‑fired generation, thereby supporting the broader industrial electrification agenda. Both the grid‑capacity shortfall and the push for longer nuclear operation highlight the strategic need for coordinated investment in Spain's power infrastructure to sustain its energy transition and industrial competitiveness.
