Pedro Sánchez visits Algeria to restore Spain‑Algeria ties and boost gas supplies

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez arrived in Algiers on 20 July 2026, shortly after attending the World Cup final in New York, to normalise relations that had been strained since Spain’s 2022 position on Western Sahara. During the visit Sánchez met President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, re‑activated the 2002 Friendship Treaty and announced a political agreement to increase Algerian gas deliveries to Spain, targeting a 10 % rise in pipeline volumes and expanded LNG shipments via the Medgaz pipeline.

The Spanish delegation included the third vice‑president and minister for the ecological transition, Sara Aagesen, the foreign minister José Manuel Albares and senior executives from Repsol, Naturgy, Enagás and Moeve. Both leaders described Algeria as a strategic partner and friend and set the stage for the eighth Algeria‑Spain high‑level summit scheduled for October 2026. The agenda also covered cooperation on renewable energy, trade, investment and security matters.

The visit signals Spain’s effort to secure energy supplies amid broader market uncertainties and to deepen bilateral cooperation beyond the gas sector.
