Spain's public EV charging network expands while many stations remain non‑functional

A recent Iberdrola | bp pulse study of over 600 Spanish electric‑vehicle drivers found that 83 % regularly use public charging points, with speed, location and reliability the top factors influencing their choice. Ultrahigh‑power chargers (150‑600 kW) are increasingly used on long trips, cutting charge times and easing range‑anxiety.

In the Canary Islands, the ANFAC Electromobility Barometer reports the region now hosts 2,392 public charging points, but 708 of them are out of service due to poor condition or lack of grid connection. Most of the operating stations are low‑power (under 20 kW), limiting fast‑charging options. The report notes the islands are lagging behind national and EU targets for charging infrastructure, highlighting a need for both more stations and improvements in reliability.

Together, the data show rapid growth in Spain’s public EV charging infrastructure but also underline persistent challenges in station functionality and speed, especially in peripheral regions such as the Canary Islands.
