Spain's Red Eléctrica model defended by Beatriz Corredor

Beatriz Corredor, president of Redeia, the parent company of Red Eléctrica, defended Spain’s current transmission system operator (TSO) structure. She argued that having the same firm manage both the high‑voltage grid and system operation is the most efficient, economical for consumers and safest arrangement, noting that Red Eléctrica invests only what regulation requires and plans €13 billion in grid spending through 2031 (€1.5 billion per year). Corredor’s comments responded to criticism from Iberdrola chief Ignacio Sánchez Galán, who advocates separating these functions and allowing private investors. She also warned that administrative delays would affect any operator and contrasted the Spanish model with the United‑States system, which she described as more unstable, costly and prone to contingencies, while citing the United Kingdom, Brazil and Australia as examples used by Iberdrola.
