Renfe strike cancels 320 trains across Spain

On Monday 29 June 2026 the Sindicato Ferroviario called a 24‑hour strike at Spain’s national rail operator Renfe. The action led to the cancellation of 320 services – including high‑speed (AVE), medium‑distance and Cercanías trains. The Ministry of Transport and Mobility set minimum service levels: 73 % of high‑speed and long‑distance trains (262 units remain in operation) and 65 % of medium‑distance services (420 trains), while Cercanías runs at 75 % during peak hours (6:00‑9:00, 13:30‑16:00, 18:30‑20:30) and 50 % at other times. Regions reported specific impacts, such as 13 cancellations in Vigo and detailed schedules for Valladolid and Extremadura. The union protests the closure of the Miranda de Ebro workshop, the sale of Renfe Mercancías and a planned joint venture with Medway, calling it a “premeditated abandonment” of the freight subsidiary and accusing the company of breaching agreements reached in November 2023 and March 2025. Renfe says the monitoring of the strike is “very reduced” and that commercial services operate with “normality”. Affected passengers can rebook on the next available train, change travel dates or obtain a full refund at no cost.
