Spain's rural villages face extinction due to depopulation
Rural depopulation is causing many Spanish villages to face extinction as residents flee to urban areas. In the province of León, the village of Quintela, situated at 1,003 meters, has dwindled to just eleven limestone houses, most of which are decaying.
Sergio Cele is the sole remaining resident of Quintela following the death of his mother. He maintains a self-sufficient lifestyle by tending to approximately twenty cows and cultivating potatoes, beans, and cabbage. Cele noted that while visitors used to stay for weeks during the summer, they are now infrequent, sometimes leaving him alone for up to 200 days a year.
In Benamira, a location that once housed over 200 residents, 39-year-old Fernando has lived for 17 years. Originally intended as a short stop, his stay became permanent due to the area's silence and tranquility.
