Spain's saffron supply threatened by US economic pressure on Iran

The United States has signaled an intention to launch an economic campaign against the trade partners of Iran to disrupt the country's finances. This move follows the United Arab Emirates' decision to suspend trade relations with Tehran.

Spain faces potential supply disruptions for saffron, a critical ingredient in its national dish, paella. While the Castilla-La Mancha region produces saffron, Spain relies heavily on Iranian imports. Historically, Spain has served as a major gateway for Iranian saffron into Europe, accounting for 75% of EU imports from Iran two years ago.

In a related development, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Turkiye’s Golden Global Bank on September 4, alleging the institution facilitated funds for Iran.
