Spain's Santander and A Coruña roll out new waste collection contracts

In Santander, the municipal cleaning joint venture Acciona‑Oxital began replacing nearly 4,000 waste containers. The new bins, installed at a rate of about 200 per week and scheduled for completion in January, remove the pedal, feature a single opening and include braille labels to aid blind residents. An information office opened simultaneously to field citizen queries via phone, WhatsApp and email.

In A Coruña, the city council awarded Novotec Consultores the task of drafting tender documents for a new cleaning and waste‑collection contract. The proposal calls for a "total" service that integrates street cleaning, waste collection and containerisation for large events, a 24‑hour emergency unit, fleet renewal and expanded summer sweeping. The previous contract was annulled by the Galician High Court in 2023 after procurement irregularities. The existing street‑cleaning service remains under a UTE led by FCC until 2028.
