Spain's SEOM reports breakthrough immunotherapy for advanced head and neck cancer

For the first time in more than two decades, peri‑operative immunotherapy has been shown to improve outcomes for patients with resectable locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The finding was highlighted by the Sociedad Española de Oncología Médica (SEOM) during its communication campaign for World Head and Neck Cancer Day on July 27.

SEOM, together with the Red Española de Registros de Cáncer (REDECAN), notes that Spain expects about 11,409 new cases of oral cavity, pharyngeal and laryngeal tumours in 2026 and recorded 3,682 deaths in 2024. Tobacco and alcohol remain the main avoidable risk factors, while HPV‑related oropharyngeal cancers are rising. Surgical approaches now include robotic trans‑oral techniques and laryngeal‑preserving procedures, and nutritional assessment and support are emphasized from diagnosis onward.
