Spain's Solar Power Surge Strains Grid, Highlights Need for Self‑Consumption
Spain added about 10 GW of renewable capacity in the past year, recording a historic month for photovoltaic generation. Despite the record output, the share of renewable electricity actually integrated into the system stalled around 63%, up from 64% the previous year. The mismatch left roughly 38 TWh of renewable energy wasted in 2025 and even larger shortfalls expected in 2026, with around 7 GW of solar generation lost each day. Zero‑price or negative‑price periods doubled, driving volatility and pushing spot prices higher for consumers, which rose to €51/MWh in May 2026 after a low‑price midday dip.
Self‑consumption (autoconsumo) is proposed as a remedy. By generating electricity on‑site, households, businesses and public buildings can reduce their demand from the wholesale market, supply excess power to the grid, lower overall wholesale prices and alleviate grid congestion. The approach also offers social benefits, lowering electricity bills for lower‑income consumers and improving system resilience. Experts argue that expanding self‑consumption, together with upgrades to networks, storage and digital tools, is essential to fully realize the value of Spain’s renewable investments and to curb the growing cost burden on electricity users.
