Spain's Solar Self‑Consumption Surge Fuels Industrial Competitiveness

Around 550,000 Spanish households now have photovoltaic installations within five kilometres, supplying 4.1 % of the country's electricity. A decree approved in March expands collective self‑consumption, allowing larger neighbourhood projects, and the government targets 19 GW of installed capacity by 2030. Battery storage has risen 65 % to 540 MWh, with six out of ten new installations including a battery, while about 2,000 GWh of electricity was lost to curtailment last year.

The average residential system costs €4,000‑€6,500 and pays for itself in roughly seven years; businesses see a five‑year return, prompting sectors such as ceramics to source 12 % of their power from solar. Over 800 energy communities are forming, enabling shared generation and local grid resilience.

Industry leaders see Spain’s abundant, cheap renewable supply as a strategic advantage, influencing location decisions for energy‑intensive activities like automotive electrification, data‑centre operations, sustainable aviation fuel production and large‑scale storage. The combination of supportive policy, falling costs and growing self‑consumption is reshaping Spain’s industrial competitiveness.
