Spain's Sumar calls for release of Sahrawi activist Naama Asfari

The parliamentary group of the left‑wing coalition Movimiento Sumar lodged a series of questions in the Spanish Congress urging the government to join the international campaign for the immediate release of Sahrawi activist Naama Asfari. Asfari, sentenced to 30 years in a Moroccan prison, is reported to be in critical health after a prolonged hunger strike and alleged denial of urgent medical care. Sumar deputies, led by IU spokesperson Enrique Santiago, cited United Nations opinions declaring her detention illegal and urged the use of EU and diplomatic mechanisms to pressure Morocco, warning that "it is essential to mobilise to save the life of the Sahrawi political prisoner Naama Asfari."

At the same time, Movimiento Sumar held an extraordinary assembly in Madrid, confirming Verónica Martínez Barbero as its parliamentary spokesperson and Rosa Martínez as the party's coordinator with 95.92% of the votes. Delegates also approved a new political‑organizational proposal, creating an autonomous Youth Space, an ecosocialist platform with the Green‑Equo party, and reaffirming a commitment to intersectional feminism. The internal reforms aim to strengthen the coalition ahead of upcoming general elections and to address internal crises that had led to high‑profile resignations.
