Spain's Sumar coalition seeks independent candidate for upcoming election
Spain's left‑wing platform Sumar announced that it will consider nominating a candidate who is not affiliated with any of its constituent parties. The proposal was presented by United Left (IU) leader Antonio Maíllo and Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun at a press conference on Monday. They said the coalition has faced months of internal debate and a lack of clear leadership, discarding several names, including Social Rights Minister Pablo Bustinduy, as the general election approaches.
The member organisations – Izquierda Unida, Comunes, Más Madrid and Movimiento Sumar – plan to continue discussions over the summer and aim to announce the candidate by September. Maíllo emphasized that the chosen person must best fit the project, regardless of party affiliation, stating “We will be up to the task and we are doing well.” The move follows previous instances of external figures leading left‑wing lists, such as former CEAR director Estrella Galán and the suggested candidacy of union leader Unai Sordo.
Sumar’s strategy seeks to revitalize its appeal and unify diverse leftist currents ahead of the national vote.
