Verónica Martínez Barbero and Rosa Martínez elected as new coordinators of Movimiento Sumar

At an extraordinary assembly in Madrid, the spokesperson of Sumar in the Congress, Verónica Martínez Barbero, and the Secretary of State for Social Rights, Rosa Martínez, were elected co‑coordinators of the party with 95.92% of the votes from more than 300 delegates. The political‑organizational report backing their candidacy received 98.96% approval. The new bicameral leadership marks the first Sumar assembly without any participation from founder and former coordinator Yolanda Díaz, who has withdrawn from the party’s organic structures.

The assembly approved five resolutions, including the creation of an autonomous Youth Space, the establishment of a plurinational and decentralized Territorial Council, and the promotion of an ecosocialist platform together with the Green‑Equo parties. It also reaffirmed a commitment to feminist, inter‑sectional policies and to strengthening alliances with progressive forces.

Strategically, Sumar aims to transform from a “umbrella” coalition into a state‑wide party with a distinct labour‑ecosocialist identity, while preparing to help re‑validate the governing coalition in the general election slated for 2027. Sources say the party’s survival and its role in the government are now central challenges for the new coordinators.
