Spain's Summer Arts Season Features Alcántara Classical Theatre Festival and Salzburg Otello Opera
The 40th edition of the International Classical Theatre Festival in Alcántara, Extremadura, runs for nine days, opening with a welcome ceremony at the Conventual of San Benito that honors past directors and key figures such as actor Rafael Álvarez “El Brujo.” The program includes a performance of “La Gitanilla,” street‑level events, and collaborations with the National Classical Theatre Company.
Meanwhile, the Salzburg Easter Festival’s production of Verdi’s Otello is being shown in cinemas across Spain, including a screening in Córdoba’s El Tablero on 6 August. Conducted by Christian Thielemann with the Staatskapelle Dresden, the staging features set design by Vincent Boussard, costumes by fashion icon Christian Lacroix, and a cast led by Argentine tenor José Cura, German soprano Dorothea Röschmann and Spanish baritone Carlos Álvarez. The event is part of the ópera Summer series that brings high‑profile operatic works to Spanish audiences via event cinema.
