Spanish Supreme Court applies amnesty to Catalan independence leaders

The Spanish Supreme Court has applied the amnesty law to several key leaders of the Catalan independence movement, effectively extinguishing their criminal responsibility and lifting disqualifications from holding public office. The decision follows a mandate from the Constitutional Court, which ruled that the amnesty must cover the crime of embezzlement in these specific cases.

Among those benefiting from the ruling are Oriol Junqueras, Jordi Turull, Raül Romeva, and Dolors Bassa. The decision also extends to Carles Puigdemont, Toni Comín, and Lluís Puig, with Judge Pablo Llarena withdrawing the outstanding arrest warrants against them. This move allows Puigdemont to travel to Spain without risk of detention and enables Lluís Puig to return to Catalonia after nine years in exile, with plans to occupy his seat in the Parliament.

While complying with the Constitutional Court's directive, the Supreme Court's Criminal Chamber expressed strong criticism of the ruling. The magistrates accused the Constitutional Court of jurisdictional interference, describing its reasoning as an attempt to mask an invasive intrusion into the Supreme Court's competencies using unnecessary grandiloquence.
