Spain's Tax Agency Offers ‘Courtesy Days’ for Vacationers

The Spanish Tax Agency (Agencia Tributaria) treats August as a regular working month but provides a voluntary “days of courtesy” scheme that lets taxpayers suspend electronic notifications for up to 30 calendar days per year. Requests must be made at least seven days in advance through the agency’s electronic portal using a digital certificate, Cl@ve, or DNI electrónico. The suspension does not halt ongoing procedures, but it prevents new notices from being deposited in the taxpayer’s electronic inbox, helping self‑employed workers and others avoid fines for missed deadlines.

Failure to declare a second residence used for vacations can trigger significant penalties. If the omission is self‑reported, a complementary tax return incurs a 1 % fixed surcharge plus 1 % per month of delay, up to 15 %. If the agency discovers the omission, it may impose interest and a sanction ranging from 50 % to 150 % of the unpaid tax. The agency cross‑checks cadastral data and rental platform information to identify undeclared holiday homes.
