Spain's tech sector exceeds 1 million jobs amid gender gap and rising digital investment

Spain's technology sector has surpassed 1.08 million professionals, driven by demand for programmers, engineers, and software developers. However, a significant gender imbalance persists in the industry. According to data from Randstad based on the second quarter of 2026 Labor Force Survey, women occupy only 20.1% of these roles, with 865,319 men compared to 217,642 women.

The gender gap is particularly pronounced in specific technical roles. Women represent only 12.7% of computer programmers and 16.4% of ICT operations and user assistance technicians. In the field of electronic and telecommunications equipment installation and repair, female representation drops to just 1%. Conversely, female presence is higher in ICT service management (39.5%) and among electrical and telecommunications engineers (23.8%).

Parallel to this workforce data, Spanish companies are prioritizing digital investment. A study by Var Group and Excellera Intelligence indicates that 82% of Spanish firms plan to increase their digital transformation budgets. For 98% of these companies, developing a digital strategy is considered essential, with 93% viewing it as a key to competitive advantage. While cybersecurity remains the primary focus for 61% of businesses, there is growing interest in artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
