Spain's tourism sector fears impact of railway instability

The Spanish tourism industry is expressing concern over declining confidence in the national railway system following two recent accidents: the Adamuz tragedy, which resulted in 46 deaths, and the Urda accident, which left 69 victims.

Public uncertainty increased after former Transport Minister Óscar Puente suggested the possibility of closing the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed line for maintenance. Although he retracted the statement days later, the new Transport Minister, Carlos Cuerpo, has since explicitly ruled out any planned interruptions to the line.

Ramón Estalella, Secretary General of the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodations (CEHAT), stated that while the exact economic impact is difficult to quantify, a lack of reliable rail service could lead travelers to cancel trips rather than switch to cars or planes due to costs and limited flight capacity. Estalella warned that such disruptions would negatively affect hotels, restaurants, and general consumption.
